Insomnia is a relatively common sleeping disorder, which affects about one-third of the adult population throughout the world. Women experience Insomnia more often then men, but the quality of sleep often decreases equally in both as we age.
Trouble sleeping can be caused by a number of factors: stress (including anxiety about not being able to sleep), extreme temperature fluctuations, environmental noise or changes, medication side effects, :: hormones :: or disruption to the regular sleep pattern. Research suggests that appetite regulating hormones are affected by sleep and that sleep deprivation could lead to weight gain. Depression, chronic pain, a variety of health issues and sleep apnea can also contribute to insomnia. Lifestyle can also be a contributing factor. Alcohol and caffeine intake and smoking cigarettes before bedtime disrupts sleep, as excessive napping in the afternoon or evening can as well. Try establishing a consistent time each night to fall asleep and your body will become more likely to fall into being able to fall asleep and staying asleep at this recognized time.
